King of America

What Uncle Ashcroft told us about kings :
America never had one

What is a king?

Somebody who is called a king.
Not a leader of an indian tribe, no, those were no american kings.

Elvis? He was called king.

No, we talk about an official political leader of a nation.

Was Louis VI a king? Yes, the king of france.

Was he leading the today's french republic? No.
The french republic doesn't has a king. But the french kingdom had.

Was he a french king?
Yes, his kingdom contained parts of today's republic of france.

Not all of it, and some parts of the today's republic were not part of his kingdom. But anyway, some parts were the same.

So were the kings of bavaria, saxony and prussia german kings, although germany never was ruled by a king. It was ruled by an emperor. Or a leader. Or a chancellor. At least parts of germany. And parts that are no longer german.

IF THERE WAS A KINGDOM ON THE SOIL OF A TODAY'S COUNTRY - NOW KINGDOM OR NOT - WE CALL HIM A FORMER "THAT COUNTRY'S" (for US american readers: to be replaces by the country's name) KING.

In the preelection campain for the so-called presidential election 2000 John Ashcroft characterized his country with his wonderful "We never had a king".
